The Water Interest Group has been working on letters to the City of San Diego and the San Diego County Water Authority about future planning for water to the residents of the county.
At the 5/5 meeting, we hope to have time to explain what we wrote and what we recommended to the two water agencies. But our main topic will be a discussion of the recently released
report from the Local Agency Formation Commission about the San Diego County Water Authority. This report is a summation of how the SDCWA has gotten so deeply into debt, what it is doing about it now, and some potential future options. Since LAFCO has the power to change the boundaries of Special Districts and cities if they feel that the current boundaries are not working well for the county. LAFCO offers 3 possible futures for the SDCWA - keep on working to handle its debt, split it up into smaller wholesale water districts, or let the Metropolitan Water District run the water distribution in San Diego County. LAFCO will meet on 5/4/2026, so at our meeting on 5/5/2026, we will know more about what is likely to happen.
