ReWild Coalition Updates:
1. San Diego Bird Alliance has just finished prepping the California Least Tern sites for their nesting season. These birds are fragile, endangered shoreline nesters and have recently been seen in North County and in Orange County.
2. ReWild is working to bring in funding for the next planning steps for ReWild through an SB1 grant application proposal to the Ocean Protection Council, in partnership with the City of San Diego.
3. The City Environment Committee approved the Mission Bay Park 10 year EIR. The SDBA supports a lot of the projects being planned for but wants to make sure that the City Council funds these programs using the Mission Bay Park Improvement Fund. The Re Wild Coalition is definitely about pushing forward high voter-prioritized use for the Fund, most of which are included in the EIR.
4. The SeaWorld drone show, to replace fireworks, was approved at the Coastal commission. SDBA, along with Surfrider, Coastkeeper, CERF and others have been pushing this for years. This is a good step forward.
5. SDBA has joined with groundwork San Diego, San Diego Canyonlands, and the Mid-City Community Advocacy Network to urge Mayor Gloria and the City Council to halt staff cuts to the Parks and Recreation Department and Open Space Division. The cuts target Assistant Recreation Center directors, the Asset Management and Park Rangers. These are staff who direct youth programming ,senior services, community park projects, habitat restoration, fire resilience work, and public-private partnerships that bring outside funding to City lands. These city staffers have vital roles in San Diego recreation and environment.
