Report on June meeting with Alliance San Diego and Info on August meeting

At the next meeting at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 13 on zoom (link in the list of upcoming events on the LWVSD website), Sheriff Kelly Martinez is speaking about the role of the Sheriff's Department in protecting residents when ICE and/or BP/Border Patrol agents are arresting people.  What interaction does the Sheriff have with Federal agents?  Why were 83 people referred by the Sheriff to ICE in 2025 after they completed their sentences in the County jail?  This number was about three times higher than previous years.

At our last meeting, the committee learned about the work that Alliance San Diego does in immigration from Andrea Guerrero, CEO.  They hold many Know Your Rights/KYR sessions because it is important for every resident to know what to do and say at an ICE arrest.  Now they are distributing door hangers written in several languages by the thousands by going door-to-door.  Alliance SD is also part of a 50-member coalition which  works on state legislation.  Their latest victory is preventing the DMV from sharing data with other states (which likely would reach the Feds as well).  Andrea concluded that we need to be powerful and show up at demonstrations and marches such as Sunday from 1:30 - 4:00 p.m. outside the San Ysidro Detention Center and Thursday from 11:00 a.m. - noon outside the Federal building at 880 Front St.  "We need to build power and honor immigrants' dignity....Everything we can do to muck up the system and slow it down will help."
