ReWild Mission Bay is a project of the San Diego Bird Alliance and 101 coalition partners. The coalition consists of conservation groups, environmental advocates, and community organizations, including The League of Women Voters.
ReWild is dedicated to restoring valuable wetlands in the NE corner of San Diego’s Mission Bay and ensuring that this part of California’s unique coastline remains healthy and vibrant for generations. Wetlands are habitats that are at least periodically saturated with salt, fresh or brackish water. Almost all of our native wetlands have been lost to development in spite of the scientific fact that wetlands are vital to providing clean water, improved habitat and climate resiliency.
On May 14, 2024, with input from ReWild, the San Diego City Council approved the De Anza Natural Amendment to the Mission Bay Park Master Plan. The plan restored 143 acres of tidal wetlands in the NE corner of Mission Bay, retained sports, parkland, and low-cost accommodations. This plan required further certification from the California Coastal Commission.
On August 14, 2026, The California Coastal Commission voted unanimously to approve the De Anza Natural Plan with substantial improvements. They further improved the plan with ReWild’s recommendations to ban artificial turf and decrease plastic pollution.
